Dubai, UAE–25th April 2006 – A nomination for “Best International Documentary Feature” and the “Audience Award” at film festivals in the USA and Canada confirms the UAE’s presence within the international film industry. “From Dust”, directed by UAE based Indian director, Dhruv Dhawan and edited by Nirmal Chander, is the first film made in the UAE to be nominated for these prestigious awards in two of the most esteemed International Film Festivals. Filmed in Sri Lanka, “From Dust”, is a cinematic expose that takes an incisive look at a government’s response to a natural disaster. Shot in the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami, this documentary brings us into close contact with three people and questions why survivors in Sri Lanka are not allowed to rebuild their homes along Sri Lanka’s coastline. “The opportunity to bring this film to the attention of international audiences where tsunami survivors can voice their plight against the forces of bureaucracy and deceit which are prolonging their suffering is extremely important. The fact that this documentary has been nominated for these awards means that people will become aware of what is happening to Sri Lanka’s tsunami survivors.” Said Dhruv Dhawan, the Director and Producer of the film. “From Dust” will be representing the UAE in the New York based, Tribeca Film Festival and the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, North America's largest documentary festival. To much of the team’s delight, this powerful documentary touched the hearts and gained the admiration of audiences and media alike. Receiving strong reviews from the international press, “From Dust”, has set new standards for local production and is airing on Showtime later this June.
